Well known Dutch house duo RoulnDoors decided to split up after almost 8 years. Roel will be continuing with a solo career under the name Roulsen. He remains signed at Be Yourself Music. Obviously this made us want to catch up with him to discuss his years as a duo & future plans. We made it happen & now you can read all about it here!
Hi Roel! Thanks for taking the time for a quick Q&A with us! First of all, we’d like to give our readers the opportunity to get to know you a bit. Could you introduce yourself & describe the music that you’re producing?
What’s up readers! I’m Roel Rats born in a town close to Amsterdam called Utrecht. I’ve been in love with music for my whole life. After my study I started as a member of DJ Duo RoulnDoors.
From this year on I started my solo career under the name Roulsen. I’d like to describe my music as energetic, melodic, sexy and groovy. You might know my tracks like Blackout and Elements.
Obviously you’ve been a duo as RoulnDoors for almost 8 years. Could you point out some highlights of your career as a duo?
Sure, for me touring around the world with my buddy Doors for our music was an incredible experience. Sensation Taiwan, our gigs in Ministry of Sound and Ushuaia where definitely highlights of that journey.
Now the paths of you and Stijn Doors have been separated, how much does that change things for you as a producer? Which direction you want to go to with your sound?
I will continue making the RoulnDoors sound but in a more refreshed way. Adding more organic and musical elements, including full songs beside my club tracks.
Let’s go a bit deeper on the subject of production, if you’re starting with a completely new track, which aspects of life inspire you to make music? + Do you have a certain way of starting, for example do you start with the melody or with the drums?
What inspires me is positive energy. When I’m in a great vibe music comes naturally. I try to keep my mind off thinking too much. Without that, I can focus on making music. I lose track of time and dive into creativity.
About new music, you’ve already released your remix for Dannic & Sick Individuals and you’ve got your first solo release coming up at Flamingo Recordings. Could you say something about other tracks you’ve got ready or collaborations you’re planning on doing?
I have so many new songs I don’t know where to start! I just finished a remix for Heart FX and Delaney Jane. Besides that, I’m working on a lot of solo projects and several collabs with exciting names! More news about that is coming very soon.
To continue on the subject of music, could you name 3 tracks that you think are the best releases so far this year?
2016 Started off great! Right now I’m a big fan of songs from Chocolate Puma, Fedde Le Grand and CID.
Obviously the Festival Season is approaching, if possible could you tell something about where your fans will be able to catch you playing soon?
Last week I played my first festival of the year. This summer you can catch me at a lot of festivals and cub gigs. Keep an eye on my socials for detailed info!
Alright that’s it, thanks again for your time & we’ll definitely keep an eye on you!
Thanks guys!
